Do you want to know more about paraprofessionals' vital role in a school and classroom? Then this workshop series is for you! Paraprofessionals provide scaffolding and support for students. They also face unique challenges that teachers and other educators do not experience. This workshop series is designed for paraprofessionals.  Over the school year, we will meet for monthly power hours. These sessions are designed to provide paras with a general overview of special education, outline the responsibilities of a para in the classroom, and learn evidence-based instructional approaches that can support all learners in the classroom. Each session focuses on a different topic, such as supporting students with challenging behaviors, using behavior-specific feedback, supporting students with reading and math challenges, creating collaborative relationships, collecting data, and so much more.   This workshop series is offered virtually through Zoom. There are ten sessions in this workshop series; participants must attend at least six sessions.

These workshop sessions meet on Zoom!

Executive function skills are mental processes that empower individuals to focus attention, organize thoughts and materials, plan and execute, remember instructions, and recall important information.  Executive function skills are vital for student growth and achievement.  Unfortunately, many students lack these essential skills that are required for learning.  This book study aims to help educators create more engaging and effective learning experiences for all students while addressing executive dysfunction and disengagement in the learning environment.

    Book study participants will:

    • Identify strategies for teaching executive function
    • Discover how to incorporate executive function as an element of core instruction
    • Discuss how to empower students to take more academic risks
    • Determine how to assist students in developing executive function skills that “stick.”

Participants of this workshop must purchase Weathers, M (2024). Executive functions for every classroom: Creating safe and predictable learning environments. Corwin.

Effective evidence-based instruction is the key to improving student engagement and achievement. The foundation of impactful and powerful instruction is Explicit Instruction. Explicit instruction includes 16 elements of instructional behaviors that assist educators in designing and delivering clear and concise instruction (Archer & Hughes, 2011). Explicit Instruction reduces the impact of student cognitive load while increasing student engagement by providing ample practice, opportunities to respond, frequent teacher feedback, and skills to be generalized and maintained. Archer and Hughes (2011) posit that how teachers teach is equivalent to how well students learn. Educators who use explicit instruction ensure that their students are learning. This book study is ideal for teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators.

    Book study participants will:

    • Evaluate the elements high-quality lesson design and implementation through the lens of explicit instruction
    • Examine critical skills needed in instructional delivery
    • Organize instruction to reduce cognitive load
    • Discuss culturally responsive evidence-based elements of explicit instruction
    • Analyze strategies for teaching vocabulary explicitly

Participants of this workshop must purchase:

Archer, A. L., & Hughes, C. A. (2011). Explicit instruction: Effective and efficient teaching. Guilford Press.    ISBN 978-1-60918-041-6  before the first session.

Literacy is the foundation of all learning.  All students must transition from learning how to read to reading for learning. This can be especially difficult for students with reading challenges. National data indicates that 69 % of eighth-grade students read below proficiency (NAEP, 2022). These students will continue to experience barriers with literacy skills associated with career and college readiness. Literacy encompasses reading, writing, and speaking, skills that are highly necessary for success. Middle- and secondary-level educators play a vital role in supporting students' literacy development, especially students with reading difficulties.  Spend a day learning about literacy in the content area classroom and learn innovative, evidence-based, high-quality instructional strategies that are game changers in the classroom.

    • Discover the power of literacy in the content area classroom
    • Examine Scarborough’s Reading Rope
    • Learn how to support literacy development in middle and secondary-level students
    • Identify evidence-based strategies that can support learning in the classroom
    • Discover how explicit instruction can scaffold and support literacy for all students

Participants will have an opportunity to practice and create several artifacts that can be instantly applied in the classroom.

What’s in a word? Turns out—a great deal. Participants in this all-day presentation will review how best to deal with one of the most powerful strands of Scarborough’s Rope: Vocabulary. This includes morphology, which helps students break down words into meaningful parts.   Vocabulary is critically important to reading comprehension.  It also helps with precision in written expression. When students understand the morphological breakdown of the words they encounter, they are better able to determine meaning.  Come join us as we play with words and their meanings and discuss better ways to help students learn and retain vocabulary words so they become better readers.

Participants in this all-day presentation will revisit the importance of writing to cement and transfer learning. Educators know that reading and writing go hand in hand as complementary skills that students need to master as they mature. The power of writing as a learning tool cannot be overstated and is a vital part of high quality instruction–one of KSDE’s four fundamentals.

Come to this session to learn about the new KSDE Writing Tenets and how they will assist Kansas teachers in providing quality writing instruction. Moreover, these tenets will support Kansas students in learning to write clearly, express themselves with intentionality, and communicate effectively with their targeted audience. Expect to learn and practice evidence-based strategies that can be taken back and applied directly to classrooms.

And when students understand the morphological breakdown of the words they encounter, they are better able to determine meaning.  Come join us as we play with words and their meanings and discuss better ways to help students learn and retain vocabulary words so they become better readers.

    Audience: ELA Teachers grades 3-12

    • This workshop is free!
    • College credit is provided at no cost to participants!
    • Lunch is provided

Please join our presenters for engaging and informative day of professional development!
