Classrooms are traditionally structured around content standards, but the skills students need to succeed extend beyond these standards. Key skills within Social, Emotional, and Character Development standards—including intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive—are essential. How can we help students acquire these crucial skills? By shifting our perspective on our roles as teachers. In this workshop, educators will learn to integrate essential skills like perseverance, adaptability, self-regulation, sustained attention, decision-making, and more into instruction. For instance, do your students give up quickly? Support them in persevering when solving problems. Do students need to be told what method or strategy to use? Help them analyze the structure or characteristics of a problem and decide on effective solution paths. Participants will leave with practical strategies and activities that foster these core competencies, enhancing students' mathematical understanding and engagement. The workshop will explore methods for creating a classroom environment that promotes active learning and the application of math in real-world contexts.

By the end of the workshop, educators will be equipped with tools and techniques to support and develop their students' core competencies, preparing them for success beyond the classroom.

Participants can earn 0.5 graduate-level credit by attending this workshop and completing a brief reflection. Additionally, attendees may receive up to three graduate credit hours for attending and applying the workshop's content to their classroom or school setting.
