Effective evidence-based instruction is the key to improving student engagement and achievement. The foundation of impactful and powerful instruction is Explicit Instruction. Explicit instruction includes 16 elements of instructional behaviors that assist educators in designing and delivering clear and concise instruction (Archer & Hughes, 2011). Explicit Instruction reduces the impact of student cognitive load while increasing student engagement by providing ample practice, opportunities to respond, frequent teacher feedback, and skills to be generalized and maintained. Archer and Hughes (2011) posit that how teachers teach is equivalent to how well students learn. Educators who use explicit instruction ensure that their students are learning. This book study is ideal for teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators.

Book study participants will:

  • Evaluate the elements high-quality lesson design and implementation through the lens of explicit instruction
  • Examine critical skills needed in instructional delivery
  • Organize instruction to reduce cognitive load
  • Discuss culturally responsive evidence-based elements of explicit instruction
  • Analyze strategies for teaching vocabulary explicitly
