WELCOME TO SMOKY HILL EDUCATION EVENT INFORMATION
This session is most appropriate for grades 5-12 teachers. In this interactive workshop, we will explore key strategies from Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics Teaching and Learning: Operations with Rational Numbers and Algebraic Equations. Participants will engage in research-based practices to build procedural fluency with understanding, focusing on operations involving fractions, decimals, and integers, as well as reasoning strategies for ratios and proportions, solving algebraic equations, and solving systems of linear equations. Through hands-on activities, collaborative discussion, and planning time, educators will leave equipped with tools to boost student confidence and mathematical reasoning. Learn how to move beyond rote memorization and foster deep, flexible understanding in your students.
Explore:
The importance of math fluency in enhancing problem-solving skills and conceptual understanding
Research-backed strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division for rational numbers, including fractions, decimals, and integers.
Engaging tools and activities—fun games, tech resources, and collaborative practices
Techniques to help students develop a growth mindset, increasing confidence and perseverance
Outcomes:
Identify and apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division strategy-based instruction for rational number operations, including fractions, decimals, and integers
Learn activities that promote flexible thinking with fractions and decimals
