Various things, including technology, highly influence children and adolescents. Are they being rewired to be more anxious? Has the shift from play-based to phone-based interactions negatively influenced children's and teens' cognitive and social development? In the book The Anxious Generation (2024), Jonathan Haidt posits that there is a strong correlation between increasing technology usage and the growing adolescent mental health decline. What can educators and families do to support and potentially improve the mental health of adolescents and children?  Participants in this book study will read The Anxious Generation and discuss the problems and the four identified “rules” that Haidt describes as potential solutions.

We will read, discuss, and reflect upon the Introduction and Parts 1 & 2 for the first meeting, Part 3 for the second meeting, and Part 4 and the Conclusion for the third meeting.  Participants must purchase “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness” by Jonathan Haidt (ISBN-10: 0593655036) before the first session.
